Week 1

Just to let you know I am trying to keep this blog readable and being a preacher I can at times get long winded, so I will try to keep each post as short and readable as possible.  I have been keeping a journal with things I think about as I read, and it turns out that I have more to talk about then I think should be in a blog.

Genesis 1-11

Gen. 1 Begin at the beginning.  Genesis begins with some extremely controversial verses.  These days many argue about how long it took to create the universe and earth, billions of years or 6 days.  Sometime ago scientists believed that the universe was always there and not created.  Robert Jastrow ends his book God and the Astronomers (which discusses the discovery of the Big Bang Theory) by saying this,

            “For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream.  He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.”

I love this.  It makes me wonder when scientists will eventually realize that the world was created supernaturally.

Other interesting things in these chapters:  The first marriage covenant.  The ground and serpent are cursed, but men and women are judged.  “Am I my brothers keeper?”  God says, YES.  Next time you see a rainbow, think of Noah.  Don’t make a giant tower or a name for yourself.
